We do not purchase used books, but we do accept donations of used books, if you’re looking for a place to unload some of your personal inventory. Horror books only, please!

Our main focus is the horror genre. We sell horror all year. This isn’t a Spirit Halloween kind of thing. We are horror lifers. Maybe that describes you, too. If so—we welcome you with gross, decomposing arms.

We have an affiliate Libro.fm account we’d recommend you checking out. When you set up an account with them, you will be prompted to choose an indie bookstore to support. Please pick Ghoulish Books and a small percentage of every audiobook purchased onward will kick back to the shop.

Please note that our shelf space is limited and running a bookshop is not cheap, so we cannot stock every title we’d like to feature.

Ghoulish memberships are $50 and are good for one year from time of purchase. All Ghoulish members receive a laminated membership card, 10% discounts both online and at our physical store, and one free snack & drink at every horror movie screening we host at the store. Saturday Night Spookies is our monthly movie screening event! On the last Saturday every month, we host a FREE secret movie screening in our bookstore. The movie title is always a secret until showtime at 8pm CST. Sometimes we offer a fun pre-show at 7:30pm. Saturday Night Spookies is typically hosted by Miguel Myers of the My Horror Confessional podcast. Although these screenings are free, we do have limited seating, so show up earlier rather than later to reserve your spot. We also sell snacks & drinks in the lobby.

Our address is 9330 Corporate Drive, Suite #702, Selma, TX 78154. We are located in the Olympia II Business Center. From Austin, take exit 173 and turn right at the first signal onto Corporate. From San Antonio, take exit 173 and turn left at the second signal onto Corporate. We are right across from City Hall. There is a wheelchair ramp directly in front of our location. Certain GPS systems might send you to a unit across from us, so keep an eye out for our green decal on the front door!

Yup! All of our eBooks are without digital rights management, which means once you own the file you are free to do whatever you’d like with it. Thanks for the support!

We sell eBooks only of the books we’ve published through our small press. Anything we did not publish is available as physical media only, since that is what we have stocked at our brick & mortar.

We offer three DRM-free eBook file types for our products: PDF, ePub, and MOBI.

If you use a Kindle, then you will want MOBI files.

ePubs, on the other hand, should work on all other eReading devices.

PDFs can work on some eReading devices, although they are more designed to be read on bigger screens, like desktop computers and laptops.

Yes. For international orders, we charge a flat-rate shipping fee of $25, and an additional $5 for every extra book added to the order. We understand that’s a lot of money to charge for shipping, but that’s simply the reality of international shipping. We’re sorry!

We make a post office trip every Friday afternoon. From there, shipping usually takes about a week, sometimes shorter. International shipping can take a bit longer. We always email customers a tracking code once the package has been dropped off at the post office.

For pre-orders, check the expected release date on the product page. If you pre-ordered multiple books with different release dates in the same order, than all items will ship once the product with the later release date arrives.

From 2013-2021 we published books solely under the name Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing, but beginning in early 2022 we started releasing titles as Ghoulish Books. We found we were focusing mostly on horror, and Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing didn’t exactly advertise that aspect. Since we were already producing a podcast called GHOULISH, it made sense to lean into that word when it came time to reconsider the name of our publishing company. GHOULISH forever.

We print our books through Lightning Source and distribute through Ingram Distribution.

We have a very limited staff, and slush is mostly read by only two people, so sometimes we fall behind on submissions. Please be patient with us. Also, we never require simultaneous submission restrictions, so please feel free to submit your story to other markets in the meantime.

In 2015, we purchased a quarterly horror magazine titled Dark Moon Digest from Dark Moon Books and started publishing it beginning with issue #20. In July 2022, we decided to discontinue DMD after releasing issue #48. Since then, we have launched a new magazine titled Ghoulish Tales, which releases twice a year.

Ghoulish Books is both a small press and indie bookstore based in San Antonio, TX. We started publishing under the name “Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing” back in 2013, then rebranded as Ghoulish Books in 2021. Our bookstore opened on April 29, 2023.

A couple years ago, we opened submissions for a new anthology titled Tales from the Crust: An Anthology of Pizza Horror. We received 57,892 stories to read for consideration, and accepted only 27 of them. The leftover rejections then went on to drown every other open call posted by other presses. The fallout became so extreme that soon these other presses started including “No pizza horror” in their guidelines. At one point, legendary splatterpunk author David J. Schow called pizza horror a “plague to the genre.” We apologize for nothing. Go buy Tales from the Crust.
